Moving Course Content from Blackboard 5 to Blackboard 6

It can take days, weeks, or even months, to fully develop a course in Blackboard. So when it's all said and done, you probably don't want to lose your work and have to reinvent the wheel. When the good news is: you don't have to. Using the following steps, you will be able to "Archive" a course that you had created in Blackboard 5.5 to a file, save it on your hard drive, and then later restore its content to a course shell in Blackboard 6

Exporting Courses in Blackboard 5.5 (courtesy of the RBS BB Help Page)

How do I export a course from the Blackboard system for backup purposes or to use in the new system? In order to export a course from Blackboard 5.5 go into the control panel for that specific course and use the course utilities option.

Next, choose archive course:

Next, choose the areas that you want included in your archive. We recommend that you only select the content if you are moving the course between two different systems. If this course is being archived and will be used on the same system in the future, you can choose any option that you desire. You should leave the package format on its default setting and then click on submit at the bottom of the page.

The course will then be compressed and you will see a screen with a link from which you can download the compressed archive:

Once you click on the link, you will be prompted to download the compressed file. This archive of your Blackboard course will be in a zip format and you can then either keep the file on your system, backup the file to removable media (recommended), or if you are moving between systems, contact your administrator to assist you in uploading the archive into the new Blackboard system.

Importing Course Packages in Blackboard 6

Now, let's take a look at how to import "Course Package."

  1. Enter the course you wish to restore an archive to and go to your control panel.
  2. Now, in the control panel, find the "Import Package" link, located among the "Course Options" area of the control panel:
  3. Use the "Browse" function to locate the file for the "Course Package" you had previously created, and then select the options for which areas you wish to restore:
  4. Click on "Submit" and wait for the receipt telling you the process is complete. Once again, please note that the larger the course package, the longer it will take to restore a Course Package.
